Seeing Secretary Cui Off to the Eastern Imperial Campaign
Chen Zi’ang(656-695)

The autumnal aura is bleak with lethalities thrill,
White Dew is the opportune time to start the campaign to have the treacherous upheavals quelled,
The Imperial Armies are not thirsty to kill,
You must take warfare with great scruple,
Our military might is formidable,
Under our armies’ devastating mettles,
Enemies to the north and south borders should be scared shriveled,
Just don’t sell out the Lu Long Pass of the borders to the devils,
Hoping to have your name be added to the chamber of the phenomenal generals.

To Deputy Chancellor Qiao      Chen Zi’ang (656-695)

In our court only schemers rise to the top,
Even those with great military feats are dropped,
Imperial censors like you, no matter how righteously you do your job,
Whoever will accord you the acclaim you ought’ve got.

銀燭吐清煙,金尊對綺筵;
明月隱高樹,長河沒曉天;

Bidding a friend farewell in a spring night
Chen Zi’ang (661-702)

Light smoke whiffs from the silver light of the candle,
With the gold goblets we’d drink each other farewell in this grand farewell party for me you throw,
Music from the zither aggregates my sundering sorrows,
Hereafter I’ll have to cross numerous mountains and plateaux,
Behind the tall trees the bright moon now goes,
The Milky Way dims away as twilight grows,
Hereon to the faraway Luoyang I strike the road,
Will we ever see each other again like the days old?

Mounting Youzhou Terrace      Chen Zi’ang (661-702)

Unable to greet personally the sagacious sovereigns of the olden days,
Neither can I see any emerging on the way,
Taking to heart the perpetual future the world still has to face,
Deploring solitarily I can’t stop my pathetic tears holding sway.
