A Triplet on Qiang Village (My Home Village) (Poem No.1)
Du Fu (712-770)

Red cloudscape on the west heaped up like monticules,
The sanguine setting sun disappeared under the horizontal,
Birds over my wicker door incessantly warbled,
Through thousands of miles I have finally arrived at my home household,
My sudden appearance to my wife and children came like a bolt,
Coming around they couldn’t stop their tears flow,
I’ve been drifting in these times of turmoil,
It’s purely fortuitous luck that I could still maintain my survival,
My neighbours crowded all over my house walls and incessantly bewailed,
Deep in the night my wife and I gazed at each other under the candle,
Suspecting this was only a dream cameo.

To Magistrate Han Chuo in Yangzhou        Du Mu (803-852)

Diaphanously the verdant mountains are shrouded and the waters spread far far afield,
Autumn comes to the end South of the River but foliage has not yet wilted,
Over the twenty four bridges of Yangzhou the bright moon wields,
Where is the fair one teaching his fife loving student belles how to play the tubule?

Mounting the Leyou Plateau Enroute to Take Up
My Official Devoirs at Wuxing           Du Mu (803-852)

If you enjoy your official devoirs in peaceful times you are literally a man of no merits and incapable,
I savour the solitary clouds as I insouciantly idle and mix only with the monks in my serene tranquil,
Now to the rivers and seas of Wuxing my banners I wield,
On Plateau Leyou to Zhao Ling the Imperial Tomb I’ll pay my homage of awe.

Putting Up at a Hostel in My Sojourn
Du Mu (803-852)

Without a companion I put up in a hostel,
Brooding over my life amidst dismals,
Under the chilly lamp things past I recall,
Sleeping in glum I am unsettled by the lone wild goose’s warble,
Returning from my long dream trip back to my homeland as twilight befalls,
Letters from home take more than a year to reach me in my hostel,
Mists and moonlight over the roving river are relishable,
What’s more delightful is a fishing boat is tied at my threshold.

Spring South of the River      Du Mu (803-852)

Along these ten miles of reds setting off by greens orioles twitter,
Amid villages by the water and city walls against the hills inn signs flutter,
The four hundred and eighty temples built by the South Dynasty Emperor,
Still stand salient amidst the mizzles and vapours.

Saying Goodbye (No. 1)     Du Mu (803-852)

Only thirteen, gracile and lithe, she is beaming with splendor,
A glowing bud in the beginning of the second month coming to flower,
Along the ten golden vernal miles of Yangzhou,
She outshines all girls behind the pearl portieres.

Saying Goodbye (No. 2)        Du Mu (803-852)

Teeming with affections,
But trying our best to hide our emotions,
Drinking you off with this wine, I really can’t put on a cheerful expression,
If not for the candles having a heart specially to heed these situations,
Shedding tears for us till the sun beams on the horizon.

Ching Ming             Du Mu(803-852)
Ching Ming is a season that it keeps drizzling throughout the day,
Bruised travelers seem to lose their souls on the way,
I’d like to find a wine shop for a resting place,
A cowherd points to a village midst the apricot trees far off the way.

Taking berth at Qin Huai           Du Mu (803-852)

The chilly river waters are enshrouded in the mists while the sands in clear moonlight,
My boat moors at Qin Huai near a wine house for the night,
The song girls, oblivious of the humiliation of a sovereign forfeiting his rights,
Over the river bank they still sing debauched songs of the old days reflecting on the debauchery nature of the fallen kingdom’s plights.

The Red Cliff                     Du Mu (803-852)

Long sunken deep into the sand, the broken iron spear has not yet rotten away,
Having it dug out and restored reveals stories of the kingdoms of the old days,
Had the east wind not gone Zhou Yu’s way,
The devastating beauty of the Qiao sisters would have been dismally locked away in the Tower of the Bronze Sparrow Cage.

Garden of the Golden Valley           Du Mu (803-852)

Gone is the sumptuous fanfare with the scented dust,
On flow the relentless waters, so the flush of the grasses,
The east wind is heavily imbued with mournful cries of birds in the dusk,
Falling flowers conjure up image of the beauty jumped from the pavilion to her last.

Autumn Night               Du Mu (803-852)

On the garnished screen autumnal tinct casts a layer of silver candlelight glitter,
With a small silk fan, she pats at fireflies that flutter,
The night sky over the courtyard is chilly and aqua clear,
Lying down, she contemplates the Cowherd and the Girl Weaver.

Speaking my bosom            Du Mu (803-852)

Fallen and wretched, I’ve been on the tramp with only my wine to drown my bale,
I am always attracted to petite and slim-waist belles,
Now, awakened from my ten-year Yangzhou dream, only to tell
I’ve only been dubbed “the philanderer” among the bordels.
