Bu Suan Zi         Liu Kezhuang (1187-1269)
Every petal gossamer and gracile,
Every scarlet dot lithe and svelte,
Who says the Heaven cares not for the blows,
Why should It exhaust Its tricks to make them in such myriad lovely and graceful modes,
In the morning you’ll see them teeming on the boughs,
At dusk you’ll only see few and little,
If Heaven really cares for the blows,
How come getting rid of them with squalls.

A Winter Scene      Liu Kezhuang (1187-1269)

I rise at once when the first ray of sunlight comes through my casement at dawn,
The northwest autumnal gale beyond the bamboos rustling to haunt,
I ask my servants to have my new warm chamber adorned,
And the boys to have my old winter clothes ironed to be worn,
My newly brewed wine is greening naturally in time to be guzzled down,
Oranges are yellowy ripe and crabs fat and round,
A garden teeming with scented fresh chrysanthemums is everybody’s demand,
For such seasonal delights nobody would blow the chance.

Yu Lou Chun  Chaffing Deputy Governor Lin   Liu Kezhuang (1187-1269)

Roaming Chang’an on horseback year after year,
Making home a hostel and the hostel the living quarters,
Idling away the days with green coins for liquor,
And gamble away night after night through the vesper,
You could easily sort out your wife’s embroidered poem letters,
But could never make out what the charming courtesans are after,
As man the lost territories on the north-west of our motherland you should always remember,
Never for the courtesans of the Water-west Bridge shed your tears.

Qing Ping Le       Liu Kezhuang (1187-1269)

On the long gale,
Against raging billows,
I ride the heavenly silver toad up to the welkin through thousand miles of travel,
I once came across in person the fairy Chang’er of the fairy tale,
Her slender figure is a real appeal,
Without sprucing she is ravishing still,
Around the silvery and pearly palace on the moon I’ve aired my heels,
Casting a downward view,
Thither hazily sealed,
Accidentally I shook the osmanthus tree as I’ve drunk my fill,
What a soothing zephyr, the whole world hail.

Bo Suan Zi  The Crab Blossom   Liu Kezhuang (1187-1269)

Butterfly-like she is feathery delicate and gossamer,
In tiny facile scarlet dots she prospers,
People say Lord Heaven is not jealous of flowers,
But in His hands in thousands of carriages and poises this ravishing flower appears,
In the morning she teems all over the runners,
She has already made herself scarce in the vesper,
If the Good Lord is really jealous of flowers ever,
Why would He send wind and rain to have her scoured.

Oriole shuttles        Liu Kezhuang (1187-1269)

Gleefully the oriole shuttles between the willows and the trees through the day,
It twitters and twitters just like a weaver plying busily over her trade,
The flowery scenery of Luoyang in the third month is as fascinating as a piece of fine brocade,
How much work has it put in to have had this made?
