Bidding Li Cao Farewell in the Evening Rain
Wei Yingwu (737-792)

River Chu is shrouded in mizzles,
Evening bells in Jian Ye toll,
Sail after sail come multiple boats,
Gloomily gloomily birds are late to roost,
Deep deep the sea gate sinks abysmal,
Trees far on the river banks are enshrouded in sodden moist,
Bidding you farewell I am dumped in infinite sorrows,
Tears shedding like mizzles on my lapels.

Delightfully Running Into My Liangchuan Old Friend
On the River Huai         Wei Yingwu (737-792)

Together in Jiang Han we once dwelled,
Whenever we met we drank to our full,
As drifting clouds apart we fell,
Like water along ten years have hence bowled,
We enjoy each other’s company as much as old,
Our hair already grizzled,
Why not back to our homeland we go?
Stranding here over the River Huai only to have the autumnal mountains to keep us in fall.

To the Taoist Monk in the Mountains of Quan Jiao
Wei Yingwu (737-792)
This morning the county office is infused with chills,
Presently the recluse in the mountains comes across my mind and has me thrilled,
He must be bundling up briery for firewood at the base of deep rills,
Boiling white stones as staples he’ll use it as fuel,
How much I’d like to bring wine with a gourd fully filled,
Far over there to have him consoled amidst the rainy night view,
But falling leaves are all over the desolate hills,
Wherever can I tread his heels?

The East Suburb         Wei Yingwu (737-792)
All through the year in my office I’m trammelled,
What a bright and broad prospect I get in the clear daylight out in the wilds,
Soothing zephyr comes amidst the delightful willows,
The verdant mountains cleanse my pent up dismals,
Relaxing insouciantly myself in the wealds,
Shuttling to and fro along the hyaline rills,
Watch the meadow turn viridescent in the mizzles,
Listening to wheresoever the spring turtledoves coo,
This is the insouciance I always aspire amidst the serene tranquil,
In my present capacity this is not always available,
There are devoirs I’ve to uphold,
Someday I’m going to have my own bower of recluse,
Hence I could tread on my admired Tao Yuanming’s heels.

Coming Across Feng Zhu in Chang’an
Wei Yingwu (737-792)

From the east comes my old fellow,
Rain in the east of Chang’an still stains on his clothes,
Whence comes he at all?
An axe for collecting firewoods in the wealds,
Obscurely obscurely blooming blossoms blow,
Jubilantly jubilantly soar fledged swallows,
Now spring has returned since last we bid each other farewell,
How much have our temples grizzled?

Seeing Off Yeung’s Daughter         Wei Yingwu (737-792)

Your days here have always been sorrowful sorrowful,
This journey will take you far far off,
This time you are going to tie up your spousals,
Against the currents your boat will sail,
Having lost your mother since a baby cuddle,
Bringing you up I’ve been particularly fondlily gentle,
Babies do need a parent’s care and fondle,
Now I’ve to marry you off I just can’t stop my tears flow,
This gives me a bruised and seared soul,
But I can’t keep you from your spousals,
You grew up without a mother’s counsel,
I am worried whether you can serve your parents-in-law well,
I know they are respectable and kind people,
Magnanimously kind hearted they are impeccable,
Coming from a poor family austerity you should uphold,
Your dowry will not be too valuable,
In your husband’s home I hope you’ll adhere to the cardinal virtues of a daughter-in-law and be filial,
Remember to keep yourself at all times decently presentable,
Here I bid you farewell,
When will we meet again just nobody can tell,
Normally I can myself beguile,
Right now I just can’t help myself,
Back home seeing my little girl,
Tears along my hat ribbons pour.

Mooring at Xuyi Prefecture for the Night
Wei Yingwu (737-792)

Shortening my sail up at Town Linhuai I am piled,
Over a solitary stage my boat pulls,
Ragingly ragingly rave the dashing billows,
Gloomily gloomily down the sun goes,
People returning amid grim mountain trails,
Wild geese light on silver grasses glittering isles,
In the solitude of the night the Qin Gate Pass I fondly recall,
Sleeplessly I listen all night to the bell tolls.

A Gathering With Literati in the County Office Amidst the Rain                  Wei Yingwu (737-792)

Like spears the guards stand in solemn files,
In the rest chambers whiffs of fragrance veil,
From the sea rain comes with the gale,
Bringing drafts of pleasant cool over the chambers and pools,
Amidst insouciance fading away are my glums and dismals,
Laterati have now in this grand hall assembled,
I am ashamed to have become an exalted official,
Detached from people’s woe and weal,
As long as I understand the basic principle I’ll not fall foul of immoral and disgraceful,
I must remain as sanguine as usual in what way I care for the people is not unchangeable,
Fresh fish and succulent meat are all forbidden by court rule,
But we still have fruits and vegetables,
Taking the wine in a guzzle,
And relish their poems teeming with jades and pearls,
Feeling relaxed and convivial I take on a buoyant soul,
How much I’d like to soar high with the gale,
Literature has been prevailing in the land of Wu from of old,
Here all these literary gentlemen have assembled,
Evinces why this place is so highly exalted,
Apart from being only affluent and loaded.

To Grand Editor Yuan While Setting Out From the
Great River                        Wei Yingwu (737-792)
Dolorously dolorously I bid my beloved friend farewell,
Lightly lightly into the brume my boat floats,
Back to my homeland Luoyang henceforth I go,
From the woods in Guangling come the fading bell tolls,
Today here we see each other off for the road,
Can we ever again come across at all,
World affairs are just like a boat drifting on the billows,
Who can ever stop the currents rove?

In Reply to Li Dan     Wei Yingwu (737-792)

Last year we bid each other farewell amid blooming flowers,
It’s been a year now today as the flowers are again flushing with glamour,
World affairs are so intricately intricate that one can never augur,
Amidst gloomily gloomy spring melancholy in solitude I respire,
With an ailing body back to a rustic life I always want to retire,
I am often ashamed of my emoluments when I see refugees in my prefecture everywhere,
You’d like to look in on me I hear,
I’ve been looking forward to your visit on the west chamber for years,

A Poem to Councillor Qiu in an Autumn Night
Wei Yingwu (737-792)

This autumn night, with you on my mind I desiderate,
I intone poems while sauntering in the courtyard with all the crisp coolness of the season to savour,
In the desolate hills, fallen pine cones are all over the place,
A refined recluse like you, I presume you are still staying up late.

In Reply to Li Huan       Wei Yingwu (737-792)

After reading the Book of Change deep in the wooded area,
The seagulls on the stream I leisurely admire,
The land of Chu is traditionally an area where bards mushroom in numbers,
Amid them with whom do you frequent each other’s door.

獨憐幽草澗邊生, 上有黃鸝深樹鳴;

The Rill to the West of Chuzhou       Wei Yingwu (737-791)

How solitary and pitiable is the grass quietly growing by the rill,
Yellow orioles sing deep in the woods up the hills,
At night into little rapids the rill turns with gusty rain and spring tide swill,
By the desolate jetty a forlorn boat lies freely at will.
