Seeing Cui Rong Off to His Expedition      Du Shenyan (645-708)

Joining an expeditionary campaign on order of the Emperor,
You serve as the secretary and chief of staff to the commander,
The tents for the farewell feast extend from the City Wall to the Luoyang River,
Army banners throb the whole Luoyang City with thunders,
They set off riding on the vivacity of the north gale’s vigor,
By night they’ll arrive amidst the bugles of the borders,
Sitting in your tent you’ll witness the dust and smog of unrest wiped clear,
Amidst the autumnal gale Gubei will be totally restored.

Writing a Poem on Mt. Zhongnan on Imperial Instruction While Attending on the Emperor in a Feast in the Three Palaces of Penglai                                    Du Shenyan (645-708)

The Polar Star hangs high by the side of the Capital,
Right in front of the Palace Mt. Zhongnan straddles,
Amidst clouds and mizzles the golden palace rambles,
From tree tops the grand palace hall dangles,
Around the waist of the mountain propitious fumes prevail,
Over the peak auspicious diaphanous brumes always shroud,
This humble official would hail,
May His Majesty live as long as Mt. Zhongnan to the eternal.

獨有宦遊人,偏驚物候新;
淑氣催黃鳥,晴光轉綠蘋;

Echoing a Poem of Chancellor Lu of Jinling
Du Shenyan (648-708)

Only touring officials dispatched to all country quarters,
Are particularly sensitive to changing weathers and vistas,
Twilight dawns with the morning glows and glazes the oceans with splendour,
Plums and willows bring spring up across the River,
Orioles sing cheerfully in the warm vernal zephyr,
Bright sunlight on duckweed glitters,
Presently comes a classical music aria,
That simmers my eyes with nostalgic tears.
