The azure waters of River Huai gleam on our door,

Stalling his horse as his host and admirer,
Gone will be the bright moon with this great officer,
Leaving the spring floods of the river running deeper and deeper every vesper.

雨恨雲愁，江南依舊稱佳麗。

水村漁市，一縷孤煙細。
天際征鴻，遙認行如綴。
平生事，此時凝睇，誰會憑闌意。

Gloomy clouds convulsed with resentful drizzles overhanging all day,

Can’t detract the beauty and fascination of the scenery South of the River at any rate,
Fishing hamlets there dot the tortuous waters and bays,
Ribbons of cooking smoke hovering over the households enhances the enchanting picture portrayed.
Wayfaring wild geese files seem like a sewn array,
I try to mull over my life in the past days,
Who’d guess at my mind as I lean on the high balustrade.

無花無酒過清明，興味蕭然似野僧。

昨日鄰家乞新火，曉窗分與讀書燈。

A Ching Ming Festival passed by with flowers and wine I’ve had none,

I feel as unpalatable as a wayfaring monk,
Yesterday I begged a neighbor who has got new cooking fire to share with me some,
So at dawn I can light up my lamp and study under my casement,
The normal daily work of a poor young scholar has thus begun.
