An Autumnal Verse (Poem No.2)       Liu Yuxi (772-842)

Mountains stand vividly salient and waters lie hyaline despite night frost extensively swills,
Red trees strut out against the rusticity befitting the seasonal feel,
On the high towers cut you to the quick will be the snapping chills,
But it spares you the enthralling ravishing vernal thrills.

An Autumnal Verse (Poem No.1)          Liu Yuxi (772-842)

Autumnal melancholy and solitude has been plaguing people from of old,
Compared to a spring morning I find an autumn day even more congenial,
In the hyaline azure ether a heron cuts across the cloudscape all by itself,
The azure heavens my poetic muse will mount as well.

A Spring Verse          Liu Yuxi (772-842)

Having exquisitely made up her face she comes down from the vermilion boudoir,
Spring delights and yearnings are all locked by melancholy deep in the patio.
As she comes to the midst of the patio she starts counting the blows,
Presently a dragonfly lights on her jade hair jewel.

Reminiscence Over Mt Xisai         Liu Yuxi (772-842)

When Wang Jun reached Yizhou in his grand ship of battle,
Presently the flamboyant regal grandeur of Jinling has gloomily turned dreary pale,
The eight thousand foot long iron chain barricade was wrecked and sunk and offered no more protective barricado,
From the Stone City flags of surrender were hurled and unfurled,
How many times in our life do we come across these saddening scenarios,
Across the chilly river the mountain is still here to straddle,
Today all quarters of the empire are united as a family on the whole,
Amidst the shivering and rattling reeds still stand the old army citadels.

Temple of the First Emperor of Shu      Liu Yuxi (772-842)

His heroics had the whole universe thrilled,
After a thousand years he still keeps people in awe,
A tripartite division of the empire was destined to befall,
His greatest feat was to have the five zhu coin money of Emperor Wu of Han reinstalled,
With the help of a capable statesman chancellor he had his kingdom founded and unfurled,
What a pity his son was not as sage as himself at all,
What is more deplorable was the girl performers of Shu in times of old,
Had to perform before the Wei court who had taken over the rule.

Contemplating the Moon in the Night of the Mid Autumn Festival                 Liu Yuxi (772-842)

Tonight the full moon’s effulgent glow,
On heaven’s order has the whole universe flushed and flowed,
Summer heat retreats leaving the empyrean freshly vestal,
Autumnal hyaline renders everything splendently vivid and graceful,
The clear moonlight even beats the stars’ razzle dazzle,
The autumnal gale and jady dews also emit glittering sparkles,
Plagued by vicissitudes is the human world,
Only the moonlight remains permanent and eternal.

Xuan Dou Temple Revisited        Liu Yuxi (772-842)

Half of the hundred acre courtyard is covered with only mosses,
Peach blossoms are all gone leaving only wild flowers making the most,
What has become of the Taoist monk who first planted the peach blows,
Here returns the Liu Chen who has been exiled and demoted.

The Peach Blossoms of the Xuan Dou Temple
Liu Yuxi (772-842)

The red dust along the purple lane puff into my face,
Everybody on the way returns after having the peach blossoms to savour,
The thousand trees of peach blossoms flourishing in the temple today,
Are all planted after this Liu Chen has been alienated.

The Black Array Alley      Liu Yuxi (772-842)

By the Vermillion Birds Bridge there teems with wild grasses and blows,
On the Black Array Alley the setting sun glows,
The swallows that used to nestle in the halls of the high and powerful,
Have now moved their nests into the ordinary households

A Verse to the Autumnal Gale     Liu Yuxi (772-842)

Where comes this autumnal gale,
Rattling it ushers in wild geese in files,
In the morning amid the trees in the court it rustles,
Who else would notice this scenario other than the solitary wayfarer stranded idle.
