Airing My Pent Up Grief (Poem No. 3)
Yuan Zhen (779-831)

Griefing for you and also for myself I sit here idle,
Even if we could live for a hundred years it is only ephemeral let alone eternal,
Void of progency Deng You deplored over his fortune wheel,
Concocting a requiem for his deceased wife Pan Yue had his brains cudgelled,
Our life wish of being buried in the same grave is a wish too unrealistically fanciful,
Wishing to be married again as the same couple in another life is simply whimsical.
I could only sit with my eyes wide open to keep you vigil,
To requite you for bearing with me a life of bales.

Reminiscence Over Mt Xisai         Liu Yuxi (772-842)

When Wang Jun reached Yizhou in his grand ship of battle,
Presently the flamboyant regal grandeur of Jinling has gloomily turned dreary pale,
The eight thousand foot long iron chain barricade was wrecked and sunk and offered no more protective barricado,
From the Stone City flags of surrender were hurled and unfurled,
How many times in our life do we come across these saddening scenarios,
Across the chilly river the mountain is still here to straddle,
Today all quarters of the empire are united as a family on the whole,
Amidst the shivering and rattling reeds still stand the old army citadels.

To the Provincial Procurators of the Provinces of
Zhang, Ting, Feng and Lin While Mounting the
City Wall of Liuzhou             Liu Zongyuan (773-818)

View on the tall tower on the city wall reaches out to the widespread wilds,
Brooding over the seas and the heavens I am plunged into an abysmal loss of dismals,
Gusty wind bringing rain beats bitterly on the riverside lotus hurling up rough billows,
A deluge of rain beats askew on the climbing fig strewn wall,
Dense foliage over the mountains block my prospect over thousands of miles,
Rivers twist anfratuously like intestinal canals,,
Together we are all cashiered to the land of the tattooed people of the Yue tribes in the southmost,
Hereafter our letters will certainly be stalled.

Putting Up at Ezhou at Night         Lu Lun (748-800)

When clouds disperse one can see from afar the Hanyang city wall,
But to reach there it takes my solitary boat one more day of sail,
Travelling tradesmen sleep in their boat in day time leaving the environs tranquil,
Amidst boatsmen palavers at night one feels the tide swells,
Stranded in the land of the three Xiang areas my temples turn autumnal frosty with dismals,
Under the bright moon I am nostalgic for my homeland still thousands of miles off,
In the expeditionary campaigns I’ve lost all my chattels,
But I still have to put up with sound of the war drums over the river that renders me unsettled.

Spring Longings        Huangfu Ran (714-767)

Twittering orioles and swallows herald New Year’s arrival,,
To Ma Yi and Long Dui on the borders there are still a few thousand miles,
In the Storied City near the Imperial Gardens I dwell,
Following the bright moon to the barbarian purlieu my heart travels,
The characters knitted in the brocade explicate a lonely boudoir’s lasting sorrows,
My sleeping in solitude is chaffed even by the overhanging blows,
Oh, General Dou, great marshal,
When will you return triumphant with your great feat phenomenal.

To Imperial Palace Steward Pei             Qian Qi (710-782)

In the second month of the year into the imperial gardens flock orioles,
Mornings in the Forbidden Palace look gloomily gloomily umbral,
Beyond the flowers fade out the Changle Palace bell tolls,
Intensely hued is the tint of the Dragon Pool willows amidst the vernal mizzles,
Even the vernal geniality cannot expunge my wretched destitute bile,
I’ve always been looking up to His Great Majesty with a loyal heart leal,
Having presented to Him for ten years my dedicated poetic prose but still not met with His gracious approval,
How shameful this hoar hair man I am in front of you such an exulted official.

The Yellow Terrace Cucumbers
Li Xian, Prince Zhang Huai of Tang (654-684)
Beneath the Yellow Terrace one grows cucumbers,
Coming of age they teem with a crop bumper,
Picking one off the whole cluster remains prosper,
Picking one more will make the bunch meager,
Another picking the whole crop may still be secure,
Picking all will leave only a heap of creepers.

To Procurator General Yuan While Espying at Yueyang Amidst the Dusk Flush When I Go from Xiakou to the
Parrot Ait                      Liu Changqing (726-786)

Over the Jing River Ait there are neither mists nor billows,
Thinking of the Chu poet Qu Yuan I am plunged at an abysmal loss,
Amidst the flush of the setting sun in Hankou birds fly off,
Spreading up to join the heavens are the Lake Dongting autumnal waters,
From the desolate city wall reclining on the mountain come the military bugles amidst the chills,
On the solitary tree by the river I anchor my boat at nightfall,
To Chngsha Jia Yi was demoted for his admonishing memorial,
This tragedy had been deplored through the ages from of old.

The Supernal Deigning Temple         Han Yi (736-790)

The Five City Wall Tower is the first to appeal to me as I mount this celestial temple,
The view over here is gloomily gloomily grim and doleful as the overnight rain lulls,
The dusk hues of the mountains of the land of Qin hither remotely sprawls,
Laundry hustle and bustle from the nearby Han Palaces announce autumn’s arrival,
Shadows of the scanty pines print on the placid empty pool,
In spring wisps of vernal scent of new grasses will infuse the small tranquil grotto,
Why look for fairyland beyond the Taoist purlieu,
In the human world fairyland always lies perdu.

Passing Jia Yi’s Abode at Changsha
Liu Changqing (726-786)

For three years here you’d been stranded after being demoted,
Passing down from ages to ages are your Chu poet sorrows,
Solitarily I seek the grasses that wilt in the fall,
I could vainly see the sun flushing over the chilly woods only when I recoil,
Even the gracious Emperor Wen of Han’s grace for you was a bit too gracile,
After being cashiered you had paid homage to the patriotic poet by the River Huai without the poet’s know,
Amidst the desolation of these waters and hills,
I just wonder for what grave reasons to end of world you should have been exiled.

A Second Farewell to Councilors Xue and Liu
at Jiangzhou                 Liu Changqing (726-786)

All my jinxed life I’ve never expected to receive a summon of grace from the Emperor to put me on His behoof,
Amidst the vicissitudes of life I could only sing with abandon and get drunk taking after the sages of old,
Over the moon lit river wild geese from the land of the barbarians fly off,
To the south of the River Huai woods in the mountains of Chu shed and fall,
By Cangzhou I lay up in self exile,
In the mirror I can’t help my hair turning grizzle,
We are becoming decrepit seniles,
How ashamed I am I still need your advice to make scruples with mischances to bolt.

Mounting the Phoenix Terrace in Jinling
Li Bai (701- 762)

On this Phoenix Terrace phoenixes used to call,
Phoenixes now come no more leaving the river itself inanely rolls,
Flowers and grasses in the Wu palaces lie perdu in the tranquil trails,
Under the ancient Jin tombs lay the Dynasty’s exalted officials,
Half of the Tripeak Mountain out into the azure ether straddles,
Right amid the bisecting River Qin Huai the White Heron Ait lolls,
Clouds have the sun shrouded,
Unable to see Chang’an up here frets one with dismals.

Seeing Off Assistant Governor Li Relegated to Shu and Assistant Governor Wang Relegated to Changsha
Gao Shi (700-765)

Seeing you gentlemen off while you are probably fretting with dismals,
Do stall your horse and tell me over the wine about your relegation abode,
The ape cries over the Wu Gorge only bring my tears to pour,
How many letters from home will the returning wild geese in Hanyang bring in holds,
The wayfaring boats on the Green Maple River will be far far remote,
The ancient trees behind the Baidi City will wilt and fall,
His sage Majesty’s grace is magnanimous and prodical,
I am sure you will soon be recalled.

Mounting the Supernal Espying Terrace on the Nineth Day with This Poem Presented to Liu Mingfu       Cui Shu (Tang poet)

This high terrace Emperor Wen of Han had assembled,
Amidst bright twilight today up here I scramble,
North facing are the clouds and mountains over the Three Jin perlieus,
Over the Two Imperial Tombs winds and rains from the east hurl,
Whosoever could be like Wan Xi the Guan Men official who had the chance to be taught by Master Laozi in times of old,
Or the Supernal of the River who never recoiled.
It’d be ideal to run across the more recent Tao the Pengze official,
Together with him over the chrysanthemums we’ll hit the booze.

A Poem Written On His Imperial Order to Echo His While Escorting Him From Penglai Hall to Xingqing Hall and
Caught in the Spring Rain                   Wang Wei (701-761)

Around the Qin borders the Huai River encircles,
Askew to the Han palaces the Yellow Mountain straddles,
From myriad palace doors emerges the Imperial Carriage through thousands and thousands of fluttering willows,
Over the boulevard His Majesty can savour the flowers in the gardens imperial,
The phoenixes of the imperial palaces can even be seen amidst the clouds,
The flourishing foliage amidst the vernal rains can be seen in the myriad households,
His Majesty’s outing is to chime in the Yang forces vernal,
He is not looking for gaieties nor gambol.

To Kuo the Chancellery Official
Wang Wei (701-761)

Rising high and reaching deep while basking in His Majesty’s gracious glow is the chancellery office portal,
Willow down flitters amidst peaches and pears umbrageous shadows,
Bell tolls from the forbidden palaces fade out as dusk falls,
Officials serving in the chancellery become scarce amidst noisy bird warbles,
In the twilight you’ll go to the court with your jade pendant from your waist dangles,
You’ll be kneeling to receive His Majesty’s edicts as dusk falls,
How much I’d like to take up official devoirs after you to follow,
But in my ailing bed I would be decrepitly trammeled.
