A Poem Written On His Imperial Order to Echo His While Escorting Him From Penglai Hall to Xingqing Hall and
Caught in the Spring Rain                   Wang Wei (701-761)

Around the Qin borders the Huai River encircles,
Askew to the Han palaces the Yellow Mountain straddles,
From myriad palace doors emerges the Imperial Carriage through thousands and thousands of fluttering willows,
Over the boulevard His Majesty can savour the flowers in the gardens imperial,
The phoenixes of the imperial palaces can even be seen amidst the clouds,
The flourishing foliage amidst the vernal rains can be seen in the myriad households,
His Majesty’s outing is to chime in the Yang forces vernal,
He is not looking for gaieties nor gambol.

To Kuo the Chancellery Official
Wang Wei (701-761)

Rising high and reaching deep while basking in His Majesty’s gracious glow is the chancellery office portal,
Willow down flitters amidst peaches and pears umbrageous shadows,
Bell tolls from the forbidden palaces fade out as dusk falls,
Officials serving in the chancellery become scarce amidst noisy bird warbles,
In the twilight you’ll go to the court with your jade pendant from your waist dangles,
You’ll be kneeling to receive His Majesty’s edicts as dusk falls,
How much I’d like to take up official devoirs after you to follow,
But in my ailing bed I would be decrepitly trammeled.

Ballad of the Peach Fountain         Wang Wei (701-761)

To savour the verdure of spring following a stream a fisherman rows his boat,
The ancient ford is flanked on the banks by booming peach blows,
Ravished by the crimson blossoms he is oblivious of how far he would go,
Presently at the end of the stream he comes across some people,
Lurking into the mountain along an anfractuous road,
Soon the landscape spreads into levels,
Looking afar he sees trees stand cloud shrouded,
Getting closer he finds the multiple households are all veiled by blows and bamboos,
Coming across a woodcutter who is still named in the Han times title,
Dwellers there are still clad in Qin times clothes,
In this Peach Fountain of Wuling all people here have built their nestles,
Here in this outlandish world they’ve all built their farming households,
Amidst the pine woods the casements and houses lie under the bright moon in placid tranquil,
The sun comes out from the clouds in the morning amidst dog barks and cock crows,
On hearing a lay outsider making them a call,
They gather in no time as surprised as enthralled,
All trying to take him home to enquire whence he comes at all,
At dawn they sweep the alleys and passages of the fallen blows,
To avoid the Qin tyranny in the first place, a fishing and a woodcutting household came to this place along the stream at night fall,
Far away from the tumultuous world,
Finding this place a fairyland haven, never back to their old world would they recoil,
People in this vale have long buried in oblivion all troubles of the outside world,
From afar people just see an empty mountain shrouded in clouds,
The existence of such a fairy haven has never been in anybody’s know,
Nostalgia for one’s homeland can hardly be completely severed for ordinary people,
When one finally discards one’s encumbers and wants to go out to see the world,
Mountains and waters make no obstacles,
Leaving one’s home before one goes gadding in abandon is the thing to do first of all,
If you think having been there once you’ll never get lost,
But the mountain and dales do keep changing in due course,
You will only remember at first deeper and deeper into the mountain you kept hitting the trail,
Approaching the cloud shrouded woods you can hardly recall having passed how many rills,
When spring comes the whole place will be peach blossoms waters swilled,
You’ll never tell where the secret of the Peach Fountain is sealed.

Ballad of an Old General            Wang Wei (701-761)

When he was just fifteen to twenty years old,
Just by walking beside a barbarian galloping soldier he seized his horse and riding it back he bolted,
In the mountains he shot a deadly tiger with a white brow,
He is no less valourous than the hero of Yexia the Yellow Bristles,
He fought in battles spanning three thousand miles,
Sword in hand he headed on an army of a million rivals,
Han soldiers were as swift as thunder bolts,
Iron puncture vine mines were what the barbarian galloping warriors feared most,
Wei Qing had never been defeated for the luck Providence bestowed,
Li Guang had never been obliged for his feat under his odd fortune wheel,
Since he was renounced he was left to languish and frail,
Time flies as he had nothing to beguile himself his hair soon grizzled,
In archery he used to excel,
Today on his left arm willow grows,
At times he even sells melons by the road,
In front of his door he plants the symbolic recluse willows,
Gloomily spreading ancient trees into his desolate alley sprawl,
Into his casements come the view of destitute chilly hills,
He swears to make the dried up Shule spring water again sprinkle,
A pragmatic man unlike the waterman of Yingchuan who could only be emboldened  by the wine bottle,
Beneath Mt. Helan soldier formations spread out like cloud files,
Night and day military documents shuttle,
The provincial governing generals of the Three River Regions are recruiting for the armies young people,
Five imperial edicts come to have the general reinstalled,
Polishing his armour as shiny as white snow,
On his precious lethal sword stars sparkle and thrill,
All he hankers is a Yan bow with which he shoots the rival general,
Greatly ashamed he would be if he let the soldiers from Yue to squabble in front of his Lord Imperial,
Never dismiss him as the old general who guarded Yunzhong in times of old,
He can still fight to earn himself feat phenomenal.

Espying Over the River Han         Wang Wei (701-761)

Adjoining the three prefectures of Xiang are the land of Chu’s peripherals,
The nine waterways flowing from Mt. Jingmen are interlinkable,
Beyond the land the river flows,
Mountains stand amidst diaphanous hazy mizzles,
Towns and prefectures along the river float,
In the distant boundless spread of voidness billows roll,
Over Xiangyang the fine sun and wind is lovable,
The recluse laying up amid the hills should find this relishable.

To Governor Li of Zizhou        Wang Wei (701-761)

Trees in the myriad ravines there rise up to the ether,
Amidst the thousands of mountains the cuckoos noisily chitter,
A night of rain over the mountains poured,
From treetops hundreds of springs splutter,
Han women there submit paulownia fibre cloths as duties to hand over,
People from the land of Ba go to the court for the taro fields they dispute over,
People there have been civilized since domestication was introduced by Wen Weng the revered Han governor,
To rival him in accomplishment would you aspire.

The Daughter of a Luoyang Household
Wang Wei (701-761)

This daughter of a Luoyang household lives just vis a vis to my abode,
She looks fifteen at the most,
Her husband rides a courser with a jade bridle,
Her maid serves her carp bisque in a gold bowl,
Her garnished chambers and vermillion pavilions stand fulgently grand and tall,
Over their eaves crimson peach blossoms and green willows veil,
Maids help her out from her silk portieres and usher her into her fragrant carriage when she goes to tie up her espousals,
Exquisite fans are uphurled to usher her into her luxurious ninefold upholstered conjugal boudoir when she recoils,
Her arrogant husband comes from a family rich and powerful,
More pompous and extravagant than Shi Chong of old,
So fond of his beautiful wife he teaches her to dance by his own,
To show off his richness he even gives away precious corals,
In spring mornings when the wind has the lamplight blown off,
Wisps of smoke fly away like minute flower petals,
After exchanging banters they wouldn’t care even to play music for a while,
After her sprucing up they just sit leisurely amidst the musk scented household,
All his friends in the city are rich and exulted,
Day and night he frequents the Lis and Chaos to make calls,
Who would cherish Xi Shi the abjectly poor Yue girl,
Who started only as a laundry girl on the river mole.

Replying Zhang the Prefecture Head of Armed Patrol
Wang Wei (701-761)

Peace and quiet is what I hanker in my late years,
There is literally nothing a damn I care,
Racking my brains on how this I acquire,
With the idea of returning to the old place amidst the woods I tinker,
There my cummerbund will be released by the pine zephyr,
The moon over the hills will be shining on me while playing my zither,
If you ask me how one would fare,
I’d rather listen to the fishermen singing deep down the river.

Farming Households in River Wei         Wang Wei (701-761)

On the village the setting sun flushes its slanting rays,
Returning to the destitute alley are the cows and sheep from the field where they graze,
Idling old rustic gaffers are longing to see the shepherds and cowherds returning for the day,
On their canes by their wicker doors they wait,
Pheasants are crowing away amidst malts fully aged,
Silkworms lie dormant as mulberry leaves become scanty day by day,
Farmers come in with their hoes to meet here after all their travail,
Cozily cozily they coze till end of the day
Such leisurely pleasure has won my genuine praise,
I keep chanting the poem Shi Wei from the Book of Songs in dismay.

The Beauty Xi Shi         Wang Wei (701-761)

Devastating ravishing looks is the adoration of the whole world,
A woman as beautiful as Xi Shi will never remain in obscurity all her life whole,
In the morning she is only a Yue laundry girl,
At dusk she is already King Wu’s concubine regal,
When she is still obscure she is just an ordinary girl
When she becomes a lady noble, people come to know she is singularly special,
Sprucing herself up by maids avail,
And clothing her with her apparel,
She becomes more and more conceited as she is being spoiled,
The king’s doting blinds him from good and evil,
Her former laundry maids are not to ride in the same carriage with her to recoil,
Different looks warrant different approvals,
She goes telling her neighbouring girls,
It’s no use mimicking my frowning at all.

The Azure Rill        Wang Wei (701-761)

People going to the Yellow Flower River vicinal,
Have to follow the waters of the Azure Rill,
Through thousands of bends within the hills,
Actually crossing less than a hundred miles it reels,
In the boat one can hear against the rocks the water jangles,
Deep in the pine woods one can relish the tranquil,
Waveringly waveringly widespread caltrops and water mallows silently on the water toss and mill,
Limpidly limpidly the hyaline water beams on the reeds with sparkling glow,
I’ve always been an insouciant soul,
With water as hyaline as this Azure Rill,
I don’t mind stay fishing on the rock till
The end of my life to perpetuate my will.

Seeing Qi Wuqian Off Back to His Homeland after
His Failing in the Imperial Examinations
Wang Wei (701-761)

There are no recluses under the sages’ rule,
Willing to serve the sovereign are all the ingenious and capable,
There are no more recluses feeding just on wild vegetables in the East Mountain as of old,
You’ve come a long way for this exam at the Hall of Gold,
Who else can again say we are unworthy people,
In the land of Huai south of the River you’ve passed the Cold Meals Festival,
You’ve your spring clothes made in Luoyang and the Capital,
Now on the Chang’an Road I’ve prepared wine to bid you farewell,
Presently this kindred friend of mine will hit his home trail,
The boat is ready to sail,
Soon you’ll be knocking at the door of your home dwell,
Distant foliage will be shrouding you all your way to salute your arrival,
The setting sun will be flushing on the solitary city wall to welcome you as well,
Your failure in this exam has deprived your chance to offer the court your flair and potentials,
But you will make good use of them one day when you meet someone who knows your are truly worthwhile.

Deluge of Rain in Wangchuan        Wang Wei (701-761)

Under the protracted deluge of rain the woods and fields are to a desolate destitute abraded,
Even cooking becomes difficult and cunctated,
So in cooking and sending meals to the farmers toiling in the east fields I aid,
Cutting capers over the vastly vastly spreading drenched fields white herons glide in waves,
Amid the shady shady summer woods orioles serenade,
In the hills, contemplating the hibiscus I sit as usual practising to meditate,
Under the pine tree vegetarian food like tree mallows I savour,
Having long withdrawn from the game of vying for power and grace,
Why should the seagulls doubt I have my aspiration of seclusion betrayed.

My Bower at Mt Zhongnan             Wang Wei (701-761)

Buddhist cultivation in my mid-age I tend to pursue,
In my late years on the slope of Mt. Zhongnan I’ve built my bower of recluse,
Whenever whimmed there I repair alone as a rule,
With no one to share I just keep the pleasurable moments to myself to peruse,
I gallivant to the end of the waters with no further to ensue,
Whence I sit contemplating the cloudscape’s evolving issues,
By chance I’ll run into a gaffer rural,
In a pleasant discourse we’ll engage and forget to truce.

Echoing Chancellery Secretary Jia Zhi’s Poem on Morning Levee                                            Wang Wei (701-761)

Dawn is ushered in by red scarf muffled callers and night watch beaters,
Robe featuring emerald cloud patterns are readied by regal array officers,
The myriad gates in the nine fold palaces are open all together,
Officials from all quarters of the Empire salute the Emperor,
As sunlight befalls imperial fans waver,
Whirling round the Emperor’s dragon robe regal incense hovers,
As the levee closes five coloured jute paper has to be prepared for the Chancellery ministers,
Whence the dingles of their donned swords fade out with the recoil of the chancellors.

Bird Twittering Rill       Wang Wei (701-761)

Osmanthus blossoms wilt,
Deep in the night, spring mountains stand still in solitude,
As the moon emerges, birds in the mountains are thrilled,
Twittering amid the spring rill.
