Drinking to Qu Jiang         Du Fu (712-770)

Idlely I sit by the lotus garden beside Qu River with no intent to recoil,
The exquisite crystal palaces become obscurely equivocal,
With the willow down the peach blossoms wilt,
Cutting capers yellow and white birds together gaily sail,
Obsessed with hitting the booze will eventually be disowned,
Against all protocol to have a levee with His Lord I always dawdle,
I’ve long hankered to retire into reclusion but by my lowly office I am trammeled,
Old and ailing I’ve been excruciated by my official devoirs.

The Great River and the Han River       Du Fu (712-770)

Between the Great River and the Han River I am a nostalgic forlornly straggling soul,
Between heaven and earth a rare bromidic pedant in this world,
Drifting like a piece of cloud in the boundless celestial,
Every night as desolate as the lonely moon in heaven I sulk through,
At my life’s dusk, I am still an ambitious soul,
Anon my ailing body seems to have turned better with the autumnal gale,
People cherished old horses from of old,
Not that they can run many miles.

Setting Off from Tanzhou           Du Fu (712-770)

At night at Changsha I drank myself sozzled,
At dawn along the vernal scenery of the banks of River Xiang I sail,
Flittering petals from the banks bid me adieu,
Murmuring swallows on my mast seem to stop me go,
Jia Yi’s flair and merits are incomparable,
Chu Suiliang’s calligraphy is insurmountable,
Both enjoyed great fame and acclaim in different epochs but died miserably after being demoted,
Brooding over my forlorn straggling futile life I’ve nothing but bales.

Thoughts on An Ancient Site (Poem No.4)
Du Fu (712-770)

The Three Gorges were fortunate enough to have been graced by the founder of the Shu Kingdom on his way to have Wu conquered,
It was in the Ever Peaceful Palace of the Baidi City that he expired,
I can still imagine amidst these empty mountains his emerald banners flutter,
It’s hard to believe over these void wild temples once stood jade palaces of grandeur,
On the firs and pines outside the ancient temple water cranes build their lairs,
Gaffers from the village come pay their homage every summer and winter,
Zhuge Liang’s shrine is just neighbor door,
King and statesman receive the same honour from the homage payers.

Thoughts on An Ancient Site (Poem No.2)
Du Fu (712-770)

Song Yu was deeply aggrieved over flowers and plants wilt and fall,
A literatus cutting a figure graciously gentle liberal and unconventional he is my revered guru eternal and spiritual,
While admiring him through these thousand years my compassionate tears fall,
Born in different ages we are glutted with different sorrows and dismals,
Dilapidated is his original home of abode but passing down from age to age is the ingenuity of his literary refinement to the eternal,
Beautiful words depicting the drifting clouds in the morning and gusty rains in the dusk are not just records of dream cameos,
What pains me most is the palaces of Chu stand no more as memorials,
Boaters today are still pointing to where they once stood with scruples.

Thoughts on an Ancient Site (Poem No.1)
Du Fu (712-770)

Broken and scattered is the northeast in these times of turmoil,
Forlornly I am drifting amid the southwest end of the world,
Pavilions and towers of the Three Gorges are shrouded in the sun’s and moon’s glow,
The barbarians of the Five Streams have mountains and clouds portrayed on their clothes,
The succumbed Jie Huns are basically unreliable,
The barbs who mourn over the tumultuous times could not yet to their homeland recoil,
The poet Yu Xin’s life is glutted with sorrows,
Grief in the poems of his late years strikes a deep chord in people far and remote.

Airing My Bosom          Du Fu (712-770)

Watching with glum dismals dew and frost grow,
Within the chilly city wall chrysanthemums blow,
Flutter amidst the gale are the snapped willows,
Mournful barbarian pipes ruffle this straggler’s tears to pour,
On the placid limpid water prints a straight chamber shadow,
Mountains grow gloomy while askew the sun goes,
Birds all come back to roost as night falls,
Leaving behind the late coming wintry crow’s ruffling caw,
