Thoughts on An Ancient Site (Poem No.4)
Du Fu (712-770)

The Three Gorges were fortunate enough to have been graced by the founder of the Shu Kingdom on his way to have Wu conquered,
It was in the Ever Peaceful Palace of the Baidi City that he expired,
I can still imagine amidst these empty mountains his emerald banners flutter,
It’s hard to believe over these void wild temples once stood jade palaces of grandeur,
On the firs and pines outside the ancient temple water cranes build their lairs,
Gaffers from the village come pay their homage every summer and winter,
Zhuge Liang’s shrine is just neighbor door,
King and statesman receive the same honour from the homage payers.
