Thoughts on an Ancient Site (Poem No.1)
Du Fu (712-770)
Du Fu (712-770)
Broken and scattered is the northeast in
these times of turmoil,
Forlornly I am drifting amid the southwest
end of the world,
Pavilions and towers of the Three Gorges
are shrouded in the sun’s and moon’s glow,
The barbarians of the Five Streams have mountains
and clouds portrayed on their clothes,
The succumbed Jie Huns are basically unreliable,
The barbs who mourn over the tumultuous
times could not yet to their homeland recoil,
The poet Yu Xin’s life is glutted with
sorrows,
Grief in the poems of his late years strikes
a deep chord in people far and remote.
