To Young Scholar Pei Di When I live in Seclusion at Wangchuan                                 Wang Wei (701 -761)

Autumnal dark greenish tints the chilly hills are beginning to show,
More sluggishly every day the autumn waters flow,
Outside the wicker door on my cane I slouch,
Listening to the chirrs of cicadas on the evening breeze float;
Against the setting sun over the jetty I behold
A lone ribbon of cooking smoke rises above the village households;
Jie Yu, the abandoned scholar Pei, is again sloshed,
He sings with abandon in front of Master Five Willows.

Seeing Meng Haoran off to Guangling       Li Bai (701-762)

My old friend takes leave of the Yellow Crane Tower in the west,
Going in this third month to the prosperous Yangzhou when the scenic glomour there is at its best,
Into the boundless azure voidness his lone boat vanishes,
While the Great River keeps rolling into the endless horizon without rest.

Inspirations upon reading           Zhu Xi (1130 -1200)

Half an acre of a pond spreads out like a clear mirror,
On it sky lights, cloud shadows all briskly share,
How you stay so limpid, I enquire,
“Just let living water keep coming to my font as ever.”

To My Sons            Lu You (1125 - 1210)

When one dies one knows everything is void,
I only lament that the motherland’s reunion is yet to be rejoiced,
When the Imperial northern campaigns have the invaders occupying the central destroyed,
Don’t forget in the family memorial ceremony to tell your old man to end his pent up chagrin in the soil.

The Decorated Zithern          Li Shangyin (813-858)
For the zithern to have fifty strings is plainly out of the way,
Every string and strut reminds me of my lost golden days,
Master Zhuang dreamt into a butterfly he reincarnated,
King Wang of Shu’s yearnings through the cuckoo he conveyed;
Tear-crystalline pearls breed in the deep sea waters under the bright moon rays,
Jade in the Azure Field by mists under the warm sun is unveiled,
All these scenarios ought to have become fond reminiscence of the old days,
Only that, plunged in reverie on the spot I was carried away.

Grasses           Bai Juyi (772-846)
Flush grasses on the plains rankly and wantonly sprawl,
Thrive and wilt with the seasons’ rise and fall,
Even prairie fires cannot burn them all,
They will come back on the vernal call;
Into the ancient route their luxuriance extends far across,
On a fine day their verdancy spreads over to the deserted city wall,
I am again seeing my dignified friend off,
Even the rank grasses seem to be imbued with sundering sores.

Mu Lan Hua  Farewell at Gaoping in late autumn
Zhou Bangyan (1056-1121)

Chrysanthemums strut fresh and fair after the rain halts over the lea,
Wind sweeping the frosts brings chills up my sleeves,
The aria of your bruised song does have my heart seared,
So much so that I gulp down my wine together with my tears;
Willows and elms along the serene ancient route stand fulgently fresh and dear,
Tie my horse at the post pavilion after people taking leave,
Tonight when I wake up from my drinks as the lamp obscures,
Only to find into a white-hair oldster this fair youngster has veered.
