Grasses
Bai Juyi (772-846)
Flush grasses on the plains rankly and wantonly
sprawl,Thrive and wilt with the seasons’ rise and fall,
Even prairie fires cannot burn them all,
They will come back on the vernal call;
Into the ancient route their luxuriance extends far across,
On a fine day their verdancy spreads over to the deserted city wall,
I am again seeing my dignified friend off,
Even the rank grasses seem to be imbued with sundering sores.
