去郭軒盈敞，無村眺望賖；
澄江平少岸，幽樹晚多花。
細雨魚兒出，微風燕子斜；
城中十萬戶，此地兩三家。

Far away from the city wall the loggia is wide and ample,

No hamlets stand in my view and form obstacles,

The limpid river water placidly lies brimming the shoal,

Umbrageous trees are teeming with captivating flowers in the vernal nightfall,

Fish cutting capers on the water relishing the mizzles,

Amidst the zephyry zephyr swallows askew shuttle,

The city is jammed with ten thousand households,

But here are only a handful.

The Solitary Wild Goose      Du Fu (712-770)

Neither drink nor feed does the solitary wild goose,

Strenuously it keeps flying and calling for its shoal,

Such a pitiable solitary soul,

Lost amidst an ocean of thousand layers of clouds,

Looking to the farthest most its shoal seem to be within its eyeful,

It even seems able to hear their responding calls,

All these is beyond the wild crows,

They just keep cawing for their own gambol.

Indolent to sprucing up herself till late in her burdoir.

On the swing she lazily plays and dawdles,

Insouciantly over the light incense she fondles,

Leaving her filigreed clothes loose and hair bun askew,

Receiving no billet doux for years from her lover far afield,

For all these years, she could only shed her tears before the blows,

She could only hope all her spring griefs the zither knows.

The myriad blossoms are even bending the boughs,

Daintily caper cutting butterflies incessantly twirl,

Leisurely relaxing natty orioles set the tempo with their entrancing twittering pulsatiles.

In front of the Master Monk Huang’s pagoda the river water to the east rolls,

Amidst vernal splendor on the zephyr insouciantly I loll,

Clusters of wild peach blossoms bloom entirely for themselves,

Some pinky and some sanguine bold they are multitudinously hued.

日暮詩成天又雪，與梅并作十分春。

Snow Plum Blossom (Poem No. 2)        Lu Meipo (Song poet)
Plum without snow does have the bravura of the blossom desecrated,
But it lacks taste with only snow but no poem to relieve the blossom’s mise-en-scene,
With the throes of composition finished and it snows again at the end of the day,
Plum and snow combining will a complete vernal scene be portrayed.

江月去人只數尺，風燈照夜欲三更。

沙頭宿鷺聯拳靜，船尾跳魚撥剌鳴。

The bright moon in the river is only a few feet from my boat,

The dim light of the lamp on my boat tells me the third watch is to approach,

Placidly herons bend sleeping on the shoal,

Anon a fish splashes on my stern with a whacking dabble.

Even today spiteful people are still writing articles and poems to have them ridiculed,

After the bodies and fame of you people have perished eventual,
Their works like river waters will forever to the east roll.
