Nian Nu Qiao  Reminiscence of the battle of the Red Cliff        Su Shi (1037 - 1101)

To the east the Great River rolls and raves,
By the billows all influential figures who called shots were washed away;
To the west of the old glacis,
There is the Red Cliff of the Chief Commander Zhou of the Three Kingdoms, people say,
Where rocks rise into the clouds over the precipice,
Menacing billows pound on the rivage,
Hurling up thousand heaps of snowdrifts;
Before such enchanting scenery many a hero vies in the race.
I recall that year Chief Commander Zhou had just wived the younger Qiao;
His quill fan and scholastic headdress portrayed            ,
A heroic figure emanating such majestic grace,
Foe battleships all turned into ashes amidst his laughters at his hand’s wave;
To the ancient kingdom my mind flies in vagary,
Jeer me being too sentimental you may,
Quipping that is why my hair too early turns grey;
Life is but a dream,
The moon in the river I’d libate.
