Let’s Drink                  Li Bai (701 - 762)
Can you not see the water of the Yellow River comes down from the heavens,
And raves, never to return, into the oceans?
Can you not see in the bright mirror in your gracious chamber,
Your silk-black hair in the morning turns grieviously snow-white in the vesper?
Lets make the most of our jovialities whenever chance we can spare;
Don’t let the bottle idle under the moon ever,
One’s gifted talents will find their uses however;
A thousand pieces of gold will all return after being quandered;
Let’s be on the spree, have a lamb and a cow slaughtered,
We’ll take long drinks three hundred cups apiece from here,
To Master Cen, and Dan Qiu the young scholar,
Let’s drink,
Don’t ever let your cup go under;
I’ll sing you a song,
So lend me your ears,
What treasure are bells and drums and dishes rare?
Let’s stay drunk and never be sober;
From of old sages are never remembered,
Only great drinkers are famous forever;
The Prince of Chen once threw a banquet in the Palace of Prosperity and Peace,
Entertained his guests with wine costing a dou ten thousand coin pieces,
Fulsomely they enjoyed the conviviality and the wheeze,
Why would I, as the host, stint on the booze?
I’ll buy more to drink with thee,
My five-colour-dappled horse,
And the fur that is worth a thousand gold pieces,
Tell my young boy to trade them for good wine,
Let’s quench our woes of thousands of generations together and be free.
