An Octet of Autumnal Melancholy (Poem No. 8)
Du Fu (712-770)

The way to the Royal Gardens and the Forbidden Lodgings River tortuously meanders,
The image of the tall Purple Tower Peak prints gloomily on the Lake Mei waters,
On fragrant grains parrots were usually foddered,
On verdurous ancient wutong trees phoenixes laired,
In spring my fair pretty travel companion picks on the way whatever she sees as spring’s splendour,
We then travel happily in the same boat in the vesper,
My animating brush has portrayed thousands and thousands of delightful moments when the state prospers,
Now drifting and forlorn at end of world I could only mull over a head of hoar hair.
