Seeing Wei Wan Off to the Capital      Li Qi (690-751)

At dawn wayfarers sing their song of adieu,
At dusk faint frost has first made its way across the River Yellow,
Listen not to woeful cries of  the wild geese when you are fretted by dismals,
The desolate clouds and mountains you’ll come across as a sojourner who travels,
The gloomy twilight over Hangu Gate Pass ushering in the chills,
Laundry hustle and bustle within the imperial gardens become clamorous towards nightfall,
Don’t take Chang’an to be a place for fun and gaieties pleasurable,
Fritter away your days in ways undesirable.
