Dreaming of Li Bai (2)       Du Fu (712-770)

All day floating clouds keep drifting along,
With us the wayfarer is yet to rejoin,
I’ve kept dreaming of you for three nights ends on,
That shows your care for me is very fond;
Whenever you took leave you always looked thorny,
You would sadly say: the way here is arduous and long,
“The waters are rough and haunted,
My boat may overturn.”
Going out of my door, you scratched your hair which was already hoar,
As if your life ambitions had been thwarted,
The capital is full of officials with high honours,
But a man like this is left alone worn and torn,
Who says the net of providence is exhaustive leaving nobody unwanted,
While this aging talented man is straitened and forlorn?
What a cruel irony,
One enjoys a fame forever honoured
Only when he has gone.

Oriole shuttles        Liu Kezhuang (1187-1269)

Gleefully the oriole shuttles between the willows and the trees through the day,
It twitters and twitters just like a weaver plying busily over her trade,
The flowery scenery of Luoyang in the third month is as fascinating as a piece of fine brocade,
How much work has it put in to have had this made?

Pavilion amid water      Cai Que (1037-1093)

On a bamboo lounge behind a paper curtain I lay on a stone pillow to read,
Tired, I dropped my book and dozed off and just let time fleet,
Awakened, relishing the leisure I’ve enjoyed, I sat alone smiling with contented glee,
Presently into my ears soul comforting flutes from fishermen on the River Canglang have reached.

Huan Xi Sha       Yan Shu (991-1055)

A cup of wine for a new verse delivered
It’s last year’s same old weather and same old pagoda,
To the west the sun retires,
When will it reappear?
Flowers wither beyond my power,
Swallows déjà vu are coming back for this year,
In the fragrant path of the little garden,
Alone I saunter.

Dreaming of Li Bai (1)       Du Fu (712-770)

On the departure of the dead, one will eventually swallow one’s sorrows,
But on the parting of the living, the sadness is eternal,
From the miasma-plagued south no news arrives of the exile;
Into my dreams comes my old pal,
Evinces how fondly of him I am mindful;
You are still stranded in law’s handle,
How could you have hither flown?
I am afraid this is not your living soul,
The journey is far too unfathomable,
When your soul came, the maple woods were green and bold,
When it returned, the passes were dark and shadowy;
The setting moon lights up all beams of my abode,
I expect on your face it still glows,
The water is deep and the billows critical,
Do keep clear of the sea-serpent’s hold.

結廬在人境,而無車馬喧;
採菊東籬下,悠然見南山;

Inspirations upon drinking (Poem No.5)      Tao Yuanming (365-427)

In a human community I've built my home cottage
Never bothered by the din of horses and carriages,
People want to know how this I manage,
Just keep your heart detached and you’ll feel the secludedness;
While I gather chrysanthemums under the east enclosure,
I savour the South Mountain with insousiant pleasure,
Each day the mountain augments its complexion with a consummate tincture,
Even birds take me as confrere;
There I’ve realized something really brightening to treasure,
When I try to expound on its nature,
Yet in a reverie I am captured.

Autumn Night               Du Mu (803-852)

On the garnished screen autumnal tinct casts a layer of silver candlelight glitter,
With a small silk fan, she pats at fireflies that flutter,
The night sky over the courtyard is chilly and aqua clear,
Lying down, she contemplates the Cowherd and the Girl Weaver.
