Dreaming of Li Bai (1)       Du Fu (712-770)

On the departure of the dead, one will eventually swallow one’s sorrows,
But on the parting of the living, the sadness is eternal,
From the miasma-plagued south no news arrives of the exile;
Into my dreams comes my old pal,
Evinces how fondly of him I am mindful;
You are still stranded in law’s handle,
How could you have hither flown?
I am afraid this is not your living soul,
The journey is far too unfathomable,
When your soul came, the maple woods were green and bold,
When it returned, the passes were dark and shadowy;
The setting moon lights up all beams of my abode,
I expect on your face it still glows,
The water is deep and the billows critical,
Do keep clear of the sea-serpent’s hold.
