Dreaming of Li Bai (2)       Du Fu (712-770)

All day floating clouds keep drifting along,
With us the wayfarer is yet to rejoin,
I’ve kept dreaming of you for three nights ends on,
That shows your care for me is very fond;
Whenever you took leave you always looked thorny,
You would sadly say: the way here is arduous and long,
“The waters are rough and haunted,
My boat may overturn.”
Going out of my door, you scratched your hair which was already hoar,
As if your life ambitions had been thwarted,
The capital is full of officials with high honours,
But a man like this is left alone worn and torn,
Who says the net of providence is exhaustive leaving nobody unwanted,
While this aging talented man is straitened and forlorn?
What a cruel irony,
One enjoys a fame forever honoured
Only when he has gone.
