Mo Yu Er                 Xin Qiji (1140-1207)
Written on the farewell feast hosted by my colleague Wang Zhengzhi at Xiaoshan Pavilion on my transfer from Hubei Water Transportation Office to that of Hunan in the year of Jihai of the Chunxi era.

How many rounds of storms could she still brave?
Spring has again retreated in haste.
Jealous of spring, I always hate flowers bloom hieing their way;
Now that fallen flowers are already all over the place,
Oh! Spring, do hold your stay,
The flush grasses that spread rankly to join the endless sky have already cut your home way,
Oh! Spring, don’t just keep quiet and have nothing to say,
Now only spiders on the ornate beams keep spinning to catch willow down trying to hold you embraced,
The beauty in Changmen Palace, being slandered and lost the emperor’s grace,
Even with the expensive Changmen Verse from Sima Xiangru could not restore her lost status,
In whom could she confide her secret affections in her later days?
Don’t rejoice yet. Just wait!
Can’t you see both Guifei and Flying Swallow ended up under the sod laid,
Glum from nowhere is the most that frustrates,
Lean not on the high balustrade,
The setting sun is flushing on the willows shrouded in haze,
What a bruising day!

Welcoming a guest      Du Fu (712-770)
On both the north and south of my cottage flow spring waters,
Every day I only have flocks of gulls as visitors,
My flower-strewn path has never been swept for a caller,
This is the first time for an honoured guest like you I open my wicker door,
A poor household far from the market we are,
I only have simple dishes and old brew to offer,
If you don’t mind drinking with my neighbouring gaffer,
I shall call over the fence asking him to share the rest of the wine together.

In Lin’an on a day when spring rain just clears
Lu You (1125 - 1210)

In recent years I find world business dry and thin as gauze,
Who makes me a visitor on horseback in the Capital once more?
I listen to the spring rain till morn in a chamber small,
From deep alleys come apricot blossoms touting calls,
Leisurely on a scrap of paper I practise cursive hand in crawls,
Playing at tea brewing and sampling under the bright window I relish a bit of time stall,
About the tumultuous situation, in plain clothes I am in no position to deplore,
Hopefully by Ching Ming I shall be home after all.

On Hui Chong’s painting ‘Night Scene of A Spring River’ (2)           Su Shi (1037-1101)

Couples of homing wild geese try to break away from their drove,
Lingering like north bound home goers they rove,
Knowing it will be hard to endure in the northern deserts the rough storms and snows,
They hope to relish the southern spring for half a month more before hitting the road.

雲淡風輕近午天,傍花隨柳過前川;

Feelings on a spring day    Cheng Hao (1032 - 1085)
Almost noon, the clouds thin, the breeze mild,
Gallivanting along the flowers and willows I come to the riverside,
People don’t know how happy I feel inside,
They think, like a young loafer I am just idling away my time.

The day spring begins                Zhang Shi  (1133-1180)

Snow and frosts shy away when another lunar calendaric rotation sustains,
The vegetation is the first to know spring has resumed her reign,
Presently a world full of life springs vividly into sight and everything rings,
When east wind ripples the water surface all greeneries chime in improvised vernal swing.

Mounting Youzhou Terrace      Chen Zi’ang (661-702)

Unable to greet personally the sagacious sovereigns of the olden days,
Neither can I see any emerging on the way,
Taking to heart the perpetual future the world still has to face,
Deploring solitarily I can’t stop my pathetic tears holding sway.
