Welcoming a guest      Du Fu (712-770)
On both the north and south of my cottage flow spring waters,
Every day I only have flocks of gulls as visitors,
My flower-strewn path has never been swept for a caller,
This is the first time for an honoured guest like you I open my wicker door,
A poor household far from the market we are,
I only have simple dishes and old brew to offer,
If you don’t mind drinking with my neighbouring gaffer,
I shall call over the fence asking him to share the rest of the wine together.
