Yi Jian Mei             Li Qingzhao (1084-1151)

On my bamboo mat I shiver amidst the autumnal chills,
The crimson lotus blossom with its fragrance shriveled and dwindled,
Shedding my gauze clothes I mount solitarily an orchid boat,
Whosoever would send me a billet doux from the clouds,
When the west tower is teeming with effulgent moon glow,
Soaring back will be many a wild goose file,
Flowers just unstoppably fall and waters incessantly flow,
When one starts to pine for one’s affaire d’amour,
Two will be dumped in glum and dismals,
There is no way to have this passionate longing quelled,
Once it is driven from your eye brow,
It zaps up into your soul.

Wu Ling Chun         Li Qingzhao (1084-1151)

The wind lulls while flowers have all wilted with their fragrance still cached in the soil,
The sun is already hanging high but I am still fainéant to have my hair combed and unsnarled,
Everything remain as they are but changed are the people and I am dumped in bleak dismals,
Before I say anything my tears first fall,
People say the vernal glamour still remains fascinating over Double Rill,
I’d like to ride a little boat,
But there the tiny grasshopper dragon boats,
Cannot hold all my miseries and dismals.

Yi E Hong   Muse on the Penglai Chamber
Zhou Mi (1232-1298 )
Up this umbrageous chamber I scramble,
The sky is laden with gloomily heavy yellow clouds portending a squall,
By Mirror Pool’s chilly shoal,
The verdant woods and grasses are all shrouded in hazy mizzles,
Stories of all the past ages fleet away in the trice of a noddle,
I am getting old,
Forlornly I drift more and more remote,
Who will still remember cruising with me on the Five Lakes in the same boat,
By the ancient stone steps the pines lean at an angle,
In the dark nooks of the mountains spread layers of old mosses,
Surging in me are glum dismals,
Returning to my homeland in Xi Pu in my dreams I recall,
And the tears over Dong Zhou I spilled,
Now up the mountains and rivers of my homeland I scramble,
Just as the verse “Mounting the Tower” on the city wall tower of Jingzhou Wang Can composed,
They are all so heartening in my eyeful,
Mt Qin Wang was as captivating as a sprucing belle in front of the Mirror Pool,
Beholding such thrilling vista, I am greatly enthralled,
Why do I pick this time to gallivant and rove,
Just trying to raise the madly concocting bard He Tianzhang to join me in verse composing over a booze to quell our dismals.

Ru Meng Ling       Li Qingzhao (1084-1151)

Last night the wind and rain squalled,
Awakened from my deep sleep I still feel fuddled,
I ask my maid who rolled up the portiere, how are my beloved blows,
She says the crab blossoms remain as usual,
Only the green leaves have bloated,
And the red blossoms have grown more gracile,
Don’t you know! Don’t you know!

Wen Que Xi   Contemplating Hurling Billows at Mt. Wu
Zhou Mi (1232-1298 )

The azure heavens and hyaline sea waters effulgently sparkle,
Dying the whole river with hues autumnal,
The giant magic turtle in the seas hurl up mountains of billowy snows,
The underwater sea serpents and dragons also start to bolt,
The sea seems to stand upright amidst the conjured squall,
Mountains stand in viridity like hair buns of fairy girls,
The heavens are painted with a flush of evening glow,
Literally there paved a red gauze roll,
With white wings spread sea birds towards the flush of glow sail,
In the twilight thrown into relief are dots of reared sails,
Anon from across the river come evening pipes ulutant tunefuls.

Written on New Year Day       Liu Changqing (726-786)

On New Year day my nostalgia increasingly rankles,
Solitarily by the boundless heavens my tears fall,
I am still nobody as old I grow,
Spring comes so soon before I know,
Day in and day out only the mountain apes to take me as confrere and pal,
Sharing the mists and breezes with the river side willows,
As unoccupied as Jia Yi I idle,
How many years more before I can return to my homeland abode.

Bidding Monk Soul Lucent Adieu        Liu Changqing (726-786)
Lying deep deep amidst the umbrageous verdant bamboos,
Vaguely vaguely the evening bells toll,
On your bamboo hat the setting sun glows,
Over the green hills alone to your remote home you go.

Putting Up at River Jiande        Meng Haoran (689-740)
At the misty ait at River Jiande I moor my boat,
At dusk in the dumps I fall,
In the desolate empty wide spreading wilds the sky seems to have fallen so low that even the trees are subsided and dwindled,
The moonlight on the hyaline river waters looks especially close and genial.

Mu Lan Hua Man A Farewell to Fan Ang the Assistant County Magistraate
Xin Qiji (1140-1207)
My passions for life have literally worn out as time fleets and the older I grow,
Over farewell banquets and fleeting years I am dumped in angst and dismals,
Coming round the corner is the Mid Autumn Festival,
But not for people usually coming together the moon puts on its full round smiles,
Neither do the insentient running waters with the west winds upon they call,
To send off returning boats,
On the river as late autumnal nights veil,
Just revel the wild rice and perch stew to the full,
And enjoy getting together with your children under the lamp as night falls,
In your travelling clothes you’d better pay homage to His Supreme Lord Imperial,
After the meritorious courtiers the court now pursues,
At midnight in the Palace Coze Hall,
You must be drafting the Emperor’s edicts and planning to reinforce the borders’ defense stronghold,
Asking after me if my Chang’an old fellows,
Just say I still indulge in wine to have my sorrows quelled,
Witnessing a solitary wild goose fall from the autumnal sky I am startled,
Amidst my drunkenness I seem to hear empty bow twangles.

Cai Sang Zi   Parting Chagrins    Lu Benzhong (1084-1145)-

I am chagrined at you not being the moon by the river tower,
South north east or west, everywhere just wheresoever, to keep me company and never part with me never ever,
I am also chagrined at you just because you are like the moon by the river tower,
After just waxing and off you taper,
You just keep waxing and taper,
When will you be waxed once more?
Whensoever! Whensoever!

Huan Xi Sha           Zhang Yuangan(1091 -1170)

The peaceful waters of the lake lie within the encircling monticules,
The oscillating waves toss and roll against the ancient city wall,
On the efflugent hyaline lake waters the verdant mountains print resplendent reflective shadows,
Idling under the crystal palace gazebo,
It’s already the third watch before I know,
Shrouding the moon are the slow moving clouds,
Dimming even the willows,
Under the zephyr the dew laden lotus twiddle,
Anon fireflies flitter on the water all over the pool,
Letting my hair down loose I sit idly till dawn calls.

Yi Wang Sun   A Spring Verse
Li Zhongyuan (Song Poet)

Pining for my love the wayfaring noblesse while the verdant green green grasses of spring lushly rankly sprawl,
High on the tower the fluttering willows keep whisking on my bruised soul,
What gnaws at me most are the rankling cuckoo warbles,
Dusk falls, outside my closely shut door the gusty rains fell the apricot blows.

Espying On the Assembled Snow of Mt. Zhongnan
Zu Yong (Tang poet)

The north side of the Zhongnan Mountain Range looks daintily contemplatable,
Amidst the clouds its snows float,
On its woods the after rain sun effulgently glows,
Making people in the Chang’an City feel a bit chilly as dusk falls.

Seeing Off Cui Jiu      Pei Di (698-763)

Going deep into mountains you are retreating into recluse,
All the highs and shallows you must have them thoroughly pored through,
Don’t mimic the fisherman of the Peach Fountain,
Just gad around for a short vacation.

Untitled           Li Shangyin (813-858)

How many layers has the silken chiffon embellished with the fern leaf ilk?
With it she makes into verdant round hats deep into midnight still,
She tries to cover her face with a fan as round as the moon but she still stays bashful,
When her carriage moves it rambles like thunderbolt,
So no one hears what she reveals,
As my golden lamp burns out its candles,
The room falls into a dim dark pale.
In the fifth month when the pomegranate blossoms turn vermeil,
She still has not had me approached,
I could only tie my dappled horse to the shore weeping willows,
To the southwest I’ll ride on the wind blows.

Bidding Monk Sublime Adieu      Liu Changqing (726-786)
A forlorn piece of drifting cloud floats off with a wild heron,
Surely not to the mundane human world they sail off,
Nor would it be Mt, Wozhou thither on,
It’s now a place well know to all.

Playing the Lute       Liu Changqing (726-786)
From the callously vapid seven string music tool,
I listen quietly to the song the Pine Wind Chills,
This is an old tune I love very much myself,
What a shame people now don’t play it much still.
