Yu Lin Ling     Liu Yong (Song Poet)

Dusk falls, autumn crickets chirr grievously throughout the day,
The gusty rain lulls over the place,
In the tent outside the capital gate,
Farewelling a friend who sets out on his way,
We don’t care much to drink in dismay,
Just when we feel hard to tear ourselves away,
The ship is ready to sail,
We hold each other by the hands and look at each other with tears ready to sway,
Trying to speak but choke and swallow our words on their way,
We know good-bye here we say,
You will be thousands of miles away,
On raving billows amidst the gloomy thick evening haze,
Under the boundless sky of the southern lands thither you sail;
From of old sentimental people are shattered by sundering bales,
Especially in desolate seasons as today,
Tonight, when I wake up from my wine, where will be my place?
It must be the willow-lined rivage,
Where the twilight breezes sweep by and the half-set moon still glimmers in the haze,
Hereafter, year after year, festivities are no longer meaningful to brace,
When they do come up,
Where can we find each other to have the deep affections between us related?
