Prospects in the Wilderness       Wang Ji (585-644)

At dusk I take a look around in the east wilds,
Reflecting on my years of forlorn driftage in nowhere to have my body and soul confided,
Trees dyed deep autumnal tinct spread wide,
With mountains all enshrouded in sunset flush aside,
Herds of cows are returning with the herder driving behind,
Hunters return triumph on their horses with the games by their side,
Nobody I come across can help put me in an influential position to go with the tide,
I can only inanely chant loud and long gathering fern leaves as the sages of the olden times.
