The Chancellor of Shu          Du Fu(712-770)

Where can one find the Temple of the Chancellor?
Outside the walls of the Brocade City amid densely grown cypresses,
Grasses on the steps relish in their own flush vernal colour,
Shaded by foliage an oriel sings in its beautiful voice with no listeners;
Three persistent humble visits laid the strategy for reshaping the empire,
Founding and upholding two courts whole-heartedly evinced the loyalty of an old courtier,
That he should have died before his expeditions bore victory
Makes men of heroic strain shed sympathetic tears.
