Lamentation by the lake         Du Fu (712-770)

On a spring day lurching along the bends of Lake Serpentine,
This gaffer from Shaoling has his tears gulped down,
On the waterside thousands of doors are locked in the chateaux,
For whom have the fresh willows and rushes put on their verdancy?
I remember when the Emperor’s rainbow banners made their way down
Into the South Park, everything seemed to bloom with radiance,
The First Lady of the Zhaoyang Palace,
Rode with her lord in the same carriage in attendance,
Before the campaign were her maids of honour with bows and arrows armed,
Riding on white horses with golden bridles champed,
Leaning back, faces sky-bound, they shot into the clouds,
The Lady laughed heartily when a bird well shot fell to the ground,
Where are the glistening eyes and charming smile now to be found?
Being blood stained, her stray wraith finds no way round,
Waters of the Wei are east bound and Jiange is far gone,
Between the dead and the living communication has broken down;
It’s only human to shed tears for such mischance,
But the waters and the flowers by the lake are not done, forever they go on, undaunted,
Dusk falls, the city is full of foreign horsemen’s dust,
My way is to the city south, but my eyes are north bound.
