The Hapless Prince       Du Fu(712-770)

From the Chang’an wall top flew some white-headed crows
Over the Gate of Autumn and cawed,
Then to the homes of men they pecked at the roof covers,
Warning the high ministers living there to flee from the barbarian scourge,
Golden whips were flailed until they broke and finally exhaustion killed the royal horses,
Even the Emperor’s own flesh and blood could not ride together with him off;
Bearing at his waist a precious jade emblem and a pendant of blue coral,
A poor prince stands weeping at a street corner,
When asked, he is unwilling to tell me what he is called,
Only says he is in great misery, and begs me to take him as my work horse,
For a hundred days he has been hiding amid the thorn-bushes in the raw,
Now not a whole piece of skin on his body is still untorn,
Descendants of the Founding Emperor all have imperial nose fit for the awe,
Seeds of the Dragon differ from ordinary men in things one and all,
Jackals and wolves now occupy the city while dragons are out in the raw,
Your Highness must take good care of your precious person and maintain a good score,
I dare not talk too long with you here at this roadcross,
But I can stand with Your Highness just a little more;
Last night the east wind carried a heavy blood odor,
East-coming camels thronged the former Capital in the gross,
The Shaofang soldiers were once great warriors,
Not long ago, they were formidable and inspired awe,
But today they don’t look like that anymore,
I’ve heard that the Emperor has already had his throne ignored,
To show his indebtedness for His Majesty’s gracious courtesy,
He and his Huamen men slashed their faces and swore
To wipe out His Majesty’s dishonour, pledged the Khan in the North,
But we must mind what we say with too many people too pawky,
Oh, Poor Prince, do take care of yourself,
May you be protected by the Imperial Tombs’ auspicious aura.
