A Spring Night in the Court Office       Du Fu (712-770)

Dusk falls, the Palace walls are hidden in flower shade freckles,
On their way home to roost, birds’ twitter turns vocal,
Stars over the myriad households twinkle,
Up in the empyrean the moon is a glowing spectacle,
Daring not sleep too fast, I listen hard to metal door tinkles,
And imagine borne on the wind the bridle bells dingle,
At tomorrow’s levee I have to submit a sealed memorial,
So I repeatedly enquire how the night dwindles.
